August tip of the Month

Leaving your dog in a parked car in the summer (even with the window left a few inches open), can cause heatstroke within minutes. Note: leaving your dog in a car parked in the shade does not assure that your dog will not become seriously overheated. Heat exhaustion is often caused by over exercising or running with a dog during hot weather. Both heat stroke and heat exhaustion can result in brain damage, heart failure or even death in a short period of time. Always bring cool water along when running or hiking with your dog during hot weather. To cool off an over heated dog, offer plenty of water, then wet the dog's body and paws with cool water, then fan.

Heartland Artists Gallery
203 N. Michigan Street, Plymouth, 574-936-9515; www.heartlandartists.org
Heartland Artists Gallery will exhibit the painting of Dorothy Morgan, a lifetime resident of Plymouth, Indiana , and a 1951 Plymouth High School graduate.
Dorothy's feature artist collection of oils and acrylics is titled '50 Years of Portraits, Landscapes and Florals.'
Dorothy has sketched and painted portraits as far back as 1945 and has since completed several hundred paintings. Her early models were study hall classmates and photographs from magazines. After Dorothy retired from the St. Joseph Medical Center as a Medical Records Technician, she enrolled in a two year art course at North Light Art Institute in Ohio. She also attended several years of art classes under well-known local artist Marilyn Krugher. Dorothy continued working on her portrait skills by taking classes with Daniel Green and Harry Ahn, both internationally recognized portrait artists. The hightlight of her art career happened after painting a portrait of ex-president Jimmy Carter in 1994. Dorothy presented the portrait to Jimmy Carter in Plains, Georgia and was honored by a personal thank you letter from the Carters. Through their correspondence, she discovered that the Carters were displaying her portrait of him in their home.
This featured exhibit runs from August 1 through September 13. Heartland Artists Gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday from Noon to 5pm.
